Is Askimet still available for free for university installations of WordPressMU? Or IT office reports: "Back when we initially started looking into Akismet, there was a free option listed that had the requirements that you describe, but it seems to no longer be detailed as an option."

Hi Margie,
Can you give me any information on what makes a university installation different from a personal installation? For one, as long as they have the updated version of WP, I don't think there is a need for the MU, or in other words, WPMU is part of the core now. I think all you need is any old API key, which I'm sure you have from Wordpress.com installation. I know I use the API code I signed up for years ago still, anytime I set up a new WP site, and it always works. Does that make sense? Let me know if I can help in any other way.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, Thanks. That is what I've done in the past. However, it is a little different if you are the administrator for a university-wide installation of Wordpress MU. They want to see verification that its ok before they do it. Jim Groom and others wrote that it was ok a few years ago but the way the askimet site is set up has changed and its harder to find out if this is acceptable.

Yes, I could see that being a complication. Well, best of luck!

A few days ago, I sent an email to Akismet support:
I'm wondering if Akismet can be used on Wordpress MU and whether it is 'free' for a university installation (non-profit, no ads).
Here's what they replied:
Yes it can be used with WordPress MU (though I recommend using the MultiSite feature in WordPress 3+ instead).
Our free accounts are for personal sites only, for other we have additional account options. Our sign up form will walk you through selecting the right account - http://aksimet.com/signup/
So, I'd say they no longer give out a free license code if you're not running a 'personal' site. I guess you can decide for yourself just what 'personal' means in your context.

We're trying to figure this out for UMWBlogs, too. Our tricky issue is whether we are thousands of personal sites (each subdomain), or one big site (which is neither personal nor commercial). We're concerned, a bit, because having students register their individual sites with Akismet would be a big hurdle to them getting started.
And so, we're also looking at little at Mollom as an alternative
