I am thinking of something that would work with flickr and text data, but am open to any suggestions.
Can you recommend some student friendly mash-up tools?

Hi Ryan,
You might be aware that there is a programming interface for flickr called the Flickr API. It allows you to work with photos and metadata on flickr. You'll need to have at least one programming language under your belt to use it directly.
For a more visual approach, Yahoo Pipes is a good tool for experimenting with data processing and programming concepts. Here's a <a href="http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/search?r=module%3Aflickr,format:csv
">list of pipes created using csv (comma delimited data from Microsoft Excel) and flickr. Try cloning a pipe that looks close to what you want and then take it apart and try to understand how it works. If you are just looking for some inspiration, here's a list of hundreds of flickr mashups.
