Can anyone point me to any good, recent publications that compare the costs of setting up and maintaining server infrastructure vs. the cost of commercial hosting? I realize that there are a ton of variables underlying the question, but I suspect someone's done some relevant case studies. I'm imagining CIO-oriented reports that are specific to the academic context. I'm pretty sure that it would be cheaper and more reliable to use a commercial host in many cases, but I'd like to provide more substantial data.

About the only recent (2009, published 2010) thing I know of is this:

... which is more of a particular narrative than anything larger-scale...
