I am transcribing and marking up medieval Hebrew manuscripts, and have encountered a phenomenon that the general TEI guidelines do not provide for. Can people recommend good examples of marked up texts or sites that exemplify best practices?
[The problem in brief: Some of the scribes use larger text for headings or labels and these displace text in the line below. Presumably this is marked with @rend on the elements in question, but I am at a loss for an efficient way to do this.]

I would suggest using "rendition". See the definition of @rendition here:

In short, you can define a "squashed" or "displaced" rendition and associate it with the appropriate spans of text (e.g. <seg rendition="#displaced">blah blah</seg>).
If you want, you can define the rendition twice: once in natural language and again in a formal language like CSS, and link both these renditions to your <seg> elements.
