Can anyone suggest good sources for bulk bibliographic records with geolocation metadata? I'm mostly interested in literary and historical texts, though other collections might serve as good examples. Typical publication location as words would be a fine start, but ideally there would be location of writing (where possible) and latitude/longitude values.

I don't necessarily have an answer, but I'm very interested in this question. I have been adding geo-location to all my items in my Zotero bibliography of Aimé Césaire. My hope is to one day map out over time his primary sources. I am very interested in what folks have to say.

Scholar's Lab folks saw this & have a query out to Cataloging & Metadata on your behalf. It's the "bulk" part of the question that's the issue. Of course, you could use gazetteer services to process the location fields in MARC records -- but you're looking for a for a dataset that's already ready for play, right?

In my own work with c. 1100 volumes of nineteenth-century fiction supplied by Indiana (an expanded set of what's in MONK), I've found that there are only about 50 unique publication locations in the metadata. It's not what you're looking for, but that's a small enough set that you could geocode them by hand. Place of composition, though, isn't addressed. FWIW (and again, totally not your question), there's some information about extracting named places from these texts on my blog.

We queried our Cataloging and Metadata Services folks. They are not aware of sources for the kind of bulk records you seek but have queries out to their professional networks as well.

Take a look at the Neue Deutsche Biographie (http://data.deutsche-biographie.de/about/) and TELOTA (http://pdr.bbaw.de/english/). Both are biography, not bibliography projects but focus on literary figures etc. and do include bibliographic and location data on their subjects.
