I've been using ArcGIS for a project, but am interesting in running some open-source alternative. I use a Mac, but am interested in recommendations for open-source GIS software for any platform? Anyone have suggestions?

There are a lot of open source GIS systems available, each with specific strengths and weaknesses. Here's a list of desktop tools that play well on the Mac (and other platforms):
QGIS: http://www.qgis.org/
Open GeoDa: http://geodacenter.asu.edu/ogeoda
uDig: http://geodacenter.asu.edu/ogeodaDepending on what you're wanting to accomplish, there are some "server" grade software apps that you can run that will do quite a few things:
Mapwarper: http://warper.geothings.net/ (source at http://svn2.geothings.net/mapwarper)
Geoserver: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/WelcomeAgain, it really depends on what you're wanting to do to pick the best package, but these should get you going.

Replying to @Wayne Graham's post:
GRASS GIS is another open source GIS program to check out.
I haven't used it myself, but it's available on the Census RDC computers I use, and I've read some favorable reviews on the web. It works with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
