I'm looking for citations for readings (articles, books, blog posts, FB updates, Tweets, whatever) on the issue of open access in digital humanities. I'm less interested in scholarly publishing (like open access journals) than in open access to project-type data (images of primary material, encoded texts, even datasets). This is for an upcoming meeting of the Decoding Digital Humanities group at IU Bloomington, so the readings would need to be accessible to non-specialists. Suggestions?
Seeking readings on open access in digital humanities

There is a growing body of work in archaeology about open data/access. I would definitely look into the work of Erick Kansa as well as the Alexandria Archive Institute(http://www.alexandriaarchive.org/) - specifically their Open Context platform (http://opencontext.org/)

Thanks Ethan. What I'm really looking for is writings about *why open access is important for digital humanities*, rather than just projects that are themselves open access (or writings about those projects, unless they touch on the larger issue). Sorry if my original question wasn't clear.

actually, Erick has published some stuff that address that very question (though, in the context of archaeology). Check out his blog (http://www.alexandriaarchive.org/blog/). Also, check out the Alexandria Archive selected pub list (http://www.alexandriaarchive.org/pubs.php). The real question is whether you include archaeology under the humanities umbrella.

One great resource about all things open and public from a legal standpoint is Duke University's Center for the Study of the Public Domain.
Also, one of the co-directors, James Boyle, tweets from @thepublicdomain. Great links and readings flow steadily from there.
Boyle also presented at UMW a few years ago, and it is an amazing talk (sorry, the site seems to be down, but here's a direct link http://andyrush.net/webcast/media/flv/fa09/keynote.flv )

I wrote a blog post about the open access that takes a different perspective, it may be helpful: http://www.kimberlychristen.com/?p=771

Testing. I posted a reply a while ago, but it didn't appear on the page and I got no error message. Trying to decide whether to re-post.
